Tonicity refers to the relative solute concentration of a solution compared to another solution, typically in a biological context, the cytoplasm of a cell. It determines the direction and extent of water movement across a semipermeable membrane, such as the cell membrane. Solutions can be classified as isotonic, hypertonic, or hypotonic relative to each other.

An isotonic solution has the same solute concentration as the cell. When a cell is placed in an isotonic solution, there is no net movement of water, and the cell maintains its normal shape. This is crucial for maintaining cellular integrity and function.

A hypertonic solution has a higher solute concentration than the cell. This means there are more solute particles outside the cell than inside. Consequently, water will move by osmosis from the area of lower solute concentration (inside the cell) to the area of higher solute concentration (outside the cell). In animal cells, this causes the cell to shrink and shrivel, a process called crenation. In plant cells, water leaves the vacuole, causing the plasma membrane to pull away from the cell wall, a phenomenon known as plasmolysis.

A hypotonic solution has a lower solute concentration than the cell. This means there are fewer solute particles outside the cell than inside. Therefore, water will move by osmosis from the area of lower solute concentration (outside the cell) to the area of higher solute concentration (inside the cell). In animal cells, this influx of water can cause the cell to swell and eventually burst, a process called lysis. Plant cells, however, have a rigid cell wall that prevents bursting. Instead, the cell becomes turgid as the plasma membrane presses against the cell wall. Tonicity is a fundamental concept in understanding cell behavior in different environments and has implications in fields such as medicine, agriculture, and biology.
