Toimintajärjestyksestä, often translated as "order of operations," is a set of rules in mathematics that dictates the sequence in which mathematical operations should be performed in an expression to ensure a consistent and unambiguous result. Without a defined order, different interpretations of the same expression could lead to different answers.

The generally accepted order of operations is often remembered by the acronym PEMDAS or BODMAS in English-speaking countries. In Finnish, the concept is understood without a specific widely used acronym, but the underlying principles remain the same. The order is typically as follows: Parentheses (or Brackets) first, then Exponents (or Orders), followed by Multiplication and Division (from left to right), and finally Addition and Subtraction (from left to right).

For example, in the expression 3 + 2 * 4, multiplication is performed before addition. Thus, 2 * 4 equals 8, and then 3 + 8 equals 11. If addition were performed first, the result would be 3 + 2 = 5, and then 5 * 4 = 20, which is incorrect. Similarly, in an expression like (3 + 2) * 4, the operations within the parentheses are performed first. So, 3 + 2 equals 5, and then 5 * 4 equals 20.
