Toiduvõrgustikku, often translated as food web, describes the complex interconnected feeding relationships within an ecological community. It illustrates how energy flows through an ecosystem, starting with producers, typically plants, which convert sunlight into energy through photosynthesis. These producers are then consumed by primary consumers, herbivores, which form the next trophic level.

Secondary consumers, omnivores or carnivores, feed on primary consumers. Tertiary consumers, higher-level carnivores, prey on secondary consumers. This hierarchical structure continues, with decomposers and detritivores playing a crucial role by breaking down dead organic matter from all trophic levels, returning nutrients to the soil, which are then utilized by producers.

Unlike a simple food chain, which depicts a single linear pathway of energy transfer, a food web acknowledges that most organisms consume and are consumed by multiple other species. This intricate network highlights the interdependence of species within an ecosystem.
