Tippu, also known as Tipu Sultan, was a prominent Indian ruler and military leader who ruled the Kingdom of Mysore from 1782 until his death in 1799. Born on November 20, 1750, in Devanahalli (present-day Karnataka), he was the son of Hyder Ali, who rose to power as the Sultan of Mysore. Tippu Sultan is remembered for his strong resistance against British colonization and his efforts to modernize his kingdom.

Tippu Sultan's reign was marked by military innovation and administrative reforms. He expanded his territory through military campaigns and attempted to establish a synthesis of military tactics and technology from various sources, including the Europeans. He also promoted industry and infrastructure development, such as establishing factories for armaments and promoting silk and other industries.

A key aspect of Tippu Sultan’s resistance was his opposition to the British East India Company. He fought against British alliances and expansion during the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War, which ultimately led to his death on May 4, 1799, during the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War at the Siege of Srirangapatnam. His death marked the end of independent Mysore resistance to British dominance.

Tippu Sultan is remembered as a national hero and a symbol of resistance against colonial rule in India.
