Tilsætning is a Danish term that denotes the act of adding something to something else, or the thing that is added. It is formed from the verb tilsætte (to add/append) with the suffix -ning, which turns verbs into nouns describing an action or result. In everyday language the word can refer to introducing a new element into a mixture, process, or system.

In technical contexts the concept appears in several disciplines. In chemistry and materials science, tilsætning refers to substances that are introduced to alter properties of a material, such as stabilizers, plasticizers, or catalysts. In the food industry, tilsætningsstoffer are additives added to foods to affect flavor, texture, color, shelf life, or nutritional value; their use and labeling are regulated by national and international authorities to ensure safety and transparency for consumers.

Outside of the natural sciences, tilsætning can describe the addition of components to a product during manufacturing or the incremental contribution of one factor to a result. The term is generally neutral and descriptive, but the implications of what is added—and why—can vary by context and regulatory framework.
