tillväxtkropp
A tillväxtkropp, also known as a growth hormone, is a peptide hormone that plays a crucial role in the growth and development of an organism. It is produced by the anterior pituitary gland in the brain and is released into the bloodstream, where it acts on various tissues and organs to stimulate growth. In humans, growth hormone is primarily responsible for the growth of bones and muscles during childhood and adolescence, as well as maintaining muscle mass and bone density in adulthood. It also plays a role in metabolism, fat distribution, and the regulation of other hormones. The production and secretion of growth hormone are regulated by the hypothalamus, which releases growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH) and somatostatin (SST) to stimulate or inhibit growth hormone release, respectively. Growth hormone deficiency can lead to conditions such as dwarfism, while excess growth hormone production can result in gigantism or acromegaly. The use of growth hormone as a therapeutic agent is common in the treatment of growth hormone deficiency and certain metabolic disorders.
