tidende

Tidende is a term used in Danish and Norwegian to denote news or tidings. In common usage, tidende is considered archaic in modern Norwegian and Danish, where the current standard words for newspaper are avis in Norwegian and dagblad or avis in Danish; nevertheless Tidende survives as a legacy in the names of newspapers and publications. Since the 18th century, the word has been used in the titles of several periodicals, especially in Denmark, to signal a publication that provides news content.

The best-known example is Berlingske Tidende, a Danish daily founded in Copenhagen, which continues today under the shorter name Berlingske. The newspaper's former name reflects the older spelling and naming conventions in Danish press history. In addition to Berlingske Tidende, a number of regional and local newspapers in Denmark and Norway bore Tidende in their titles during the 19th and early 20th centuries; many later shortened or renamed.

Beyond newspapers, Tidende also appears in historical texts as the Danish and Norwegian word for tidings or news, used in literature and lexica and as a marker of serialized news publication in the era before standardized naming.
