Tesztoszteron is the primary male sex hormone, though it is also present in females. It plays a crucial role in the development of male reproductive tissues and is essential for the maintenance of secondary male characteristics. In men, tesztoszteron is produced mainly in the testicles, with a small amount produced by the adrenal glands. In women, it is produced in the ovaries and adrenal glands.

The production of tesztoszteron is regulated by the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. The hypothalamus releases gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), which stimulates the pituitary gland to release luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). LH then signals the testes to produce tesztoszteron.

Tesztoszteron levels naturally decline with age, a process known as andropause or age-related tesztoszteron decline. This decline can lead to various symptoms, including decreased libido, fatigue, mood changes, and loss of muscle mass.

Beyond its role in sexual development and function, tesztoszteron also influences bone density, red blood cell production, mood, and cognitive function in both sexes. In medical contexts, tesztoszteron is sometimes used to treat conditions associated with tesztoszteron deficiency, such as hypogonadism. It is also illegally used by some athletes to enhance performance.
