A terpolymer is a polymer derived from three different monomer species. This is in contrast to a homopolymer, which is made from a single type of monomer, or a copolymer, which is made from two types of monomers. The synthesis of terpolymers typically involves polymerization reactions such as free radical, anionic, cationic, or coordination polymerization. The specific method chosen depends on the reactivity of the monomers involved. Random terpolymers have monomers distributed randomly along the chain, while alternating terpolymers have monomers arranged in a regular ABAB pattern. Block terpolymers consist of long sequences of each monomer type, and graft terpolymers have side chains of one monomer attached to a backbone of another.

Terpolymers offer a wide range of tunable properties, allowing for the design of materials with specific applications. For example, by varying the ratio and arrangement of monomers, it's possible to influence the glass transition temperature, solubility, mechanical strength, thermal stability, and optical properties of the resulting polymer. This versatility makes terpolymers valuable in various industries, including coatings, adhesives, plastics, elastomers, and specialty chemicals. Examples include acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) plastic, which combines the rigidity of acrylonitrile, the toughness of butadiene rubber, and the ease of processing of styrene. Another example is styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) block copolymers, which are used in footwear and asphalt modification.
