The primary challenge in creating a sustained fusion reaction on Earth is achieving the extreme conditions necessary for fusion to occur. Magnetic confinement fusion uses powerful magnetic fields to contain the plasma, preventing it from touching the reactor walls. Devices like tokamaks and stellarators are examples of magnetic confinement designs. Inertial confinement fusion, on the other hand, uses intense lasers or particle beams to rapidly compress and heat a small pellet of fusion fuel, initiating fusion before the fuel can disperse.

The fuel commonly considered for fusion reactors is a mixture of deuterium and tritium, isotopes of hydrogen. Deuterium is readily available from water, while tritium can be bred within the reactor itself from lithium. Successful development of a termotuumasünteesireaktori could offer a virtually inexhaustible and clean source of energy, producing minimal long-lived radioactive waste compared to current nuclear fission reactors. Significant scientific and engineering challenges remain before fusion power can become a practical reality.
