Termycladin is a natural antibiotic compound produced by the actinobacterium Streptomyces thermoviolaceus. It was first isolated and characterized in the early 1960s. Termycladin is a potent inhibitor of bacterial cell wall synthesis, and as such, it exhibits broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.

The mode of action of termycladin is distinct from that of traditional beta-lactam antibiotics, which work by inhibiting cell wall synthesis through a mechanism involving peptidoglycan formation. Termycladin, on the other hand, acts by binding to the enzyme penicillin-binding protein (PBP) and preventing the transformation of UDP-N-acetylglucosamine into a polymeric cell wall.
