Tasalämpöistä is a Finnish term that translates to "constant temperature" or "homeothermic." It describes organisms that maintain a stable internal body temperature regardless of external environmental conditions. This ability is a hallmark of endotherms, which include mammals and birds. Unlike ectotherms, whose body temperature fluctuates with their surroundings, homeotherms generate their own heat internally through metabolic processes and have developed physiological and behavioral mechanisms to regulate this temperature.

The regulation of body temperature in homeotherms is a complex process involving the nervous system, particularly the hypothalamus in the brain, which acts as a thermostat. When the body temperature deviates from the set point, the hypothalamus triggers responses to either conserve heat or dissipate it. For instance, shivering increases muscle activity to generate heat, while sweating or vasodilation (widening of blood vessels) helps to release excess heat.

Maintaining a constant internal temperature allows homeotherms to remain active in a wider range of environmental conditions, from cold climates to hot deserts. This metabolic efficiency, however, comes at a cost: higher energy requirements compared to ectotherms. The stable internal environment is crucial for optimal enzyme function and metabolic rate, supporting complex physiological processes essential for survival and activity.
