The submucosa is a layer of connective tissue that lies directly beneath the mucosa in many organs of the body, including the gastrointestinal tract, respiratory tract, and urinary tract. It is an integral part of the organ's wall and plays a crucial role in its structure and function.

In the gastrointestinal tract, the submucosa is particularly well-developed. It contains blood vessels, lymphatic vessels, nerves, and glands. The blood vessels supply nutrients and oxygen to the mucosa and remove waste products. The lymphatic vessels are part of the immune system and help to defend against infection. The nerves of the submucosa, collectively known as the submucosal plexus or Meissner's plexus, are responsible for regulating glandular secretions and smooth muscle contractions within the gut wall, influencing digestion and absorption. Glands within the submucosa secrete mucus and other digestive substances that aid in the breakdown and transport of food.

The submucosa's structural role is to bind the mucosa to the underlying muscularis externa. This connection allows the mucosa to move independently of the deeper muscle layers, which is essential for processes like peristalsis and the formation of folds that increase surface area for absorption. The submucosa also provides elasticity and support to the organ wall, enabling it to stretch and accommodate varying contents. Its presence is a distinguishing feature of the histological layers of many hollow organs.
