Talvirengasmääräykset refer to legal regulations in Finland concerning the use of winter tires. These regulations primarily aim to ensure road safety during winter conditions, which can include snow, ice, and slush.

Generally, the use of winter tires is mandatory for motor vehicles during the winter season. This period is typically defined as from December 1st to March 1st. Winter tires must be fitted to the driven wheels of the vehicle, and for four-wheel-drive vehicles, all four wheels must be equipped with winter tires.

The definition of a winter tire is also specified by law. Tires are considered winter tires if they are marked with the M+S (Mud and Snow) symbol, or a snowflake symbol (3PMSF). Studded tires are also permitted during this period.

There are certain exceptions to the general rule. For instance, if road conditions do not warrant the use of winter tires, they may not be mandatory. However, the driver bears the responsibility of assessing whether the conditions necessitate their use. Trailers pulled by passenger cars are also subject to winter tire requirements.
