Süüteküünlata, sometimes referred to as a glow plug, is a component found in diesel engines. Its primary function is to aid in the cold starting of the engine. Diesel engines rely on compression to ignite the fuel, and in cold conditions, the compression alone may not generate enough heat to reliably start the engine. The süüteküünlata heats the combustion chamber, providing the necessary temperature for ignition.

The süüteküünlata consists of a heating element, typically a coil of wire, encased in a protective sheath. When the ignition is switched on, an electric current passes through the heating element, causing it to glow red hot. This heat is transferred to the surrounding air and the cylinder walls. In most modern diesel engines, the süüteküünlad operate for a short period before and after the engine starts. Some systems may also activate them intermittently during operation if the engine temperature drops too low. The süüteküünlata is essential for ensuring smooth and reliable starting of diesel engines, especially in colder climates, and contributes to reduced emissions during the starting phase. Failure of a süüteküünlata can result in difficult or impossible engine starting.
