Süsinikuvarusid is the Estonian term for carbon reserves. It refers to the total amount of carbon that is stored in various natural reservoirs on Earth. These reservoirs include the atmosphere, oceans, land biosphere (living organisms and soils), and the lithosphere (rocks and fossil fuels). The distribution of carbon among these reservoirs is constantly changing due to natural processes and human activities.

The carbon cycle describes the continuous movement of carbon atoms between these different reservoirs. Key processes involved in the carbon cycle include photosynthesis, respiration, decomposition, combustion, and ocean-atmosphere gas exchange. Photosynthesis by plants and phytoplankton removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and stores it in organic matter. Respiration by organisms releases carbon dioxide back into the atmosphere. Decomposition of organic matter also releases carbon.

Human activities, particularly the burning of fossil fuels (coal, oil, and natural gas) and deforestation, have significantly increased the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. This excess atmospheric carbon dioxide is a primary driver of climate change.
