Synchondroses are a type of cartilaginous joint where the bones are united by hyaline cartilage. They are amphiarthrotic, meaning they allow for slight movement. These joints are typically found in growing bones and are temporary structures that eventually ossify, becoming synostoses (bony joints).

A prime example of a synchondrosis is the epiphyseal plate, also known as the growth plate, located between the epiphysis and diaphysis of long bones. This cartilaginous plate is crucial for longitudinal bone growth. As a person matures, the hyaline cartilage in the epiphyseal plate is gradually replaced by bone, fusing the epiphysis and diaphysis and marking the end of significant bone lengthening.

Another example can be found in the first sternocostal joint, where the first rib articulates with the manubrium of the sternum. This joint is also characterized by hyaline cartilage and allows for some limited movement. While most synchondroses are temporary, the first sternocostal joint is considered a permanent synchondrosis, although its mobility decreases with age. The joints between the basioccipital and sphenoid bones in the skull of infants are also synchondroses. Their ossification is a significant developmental milestone.
