Säästölamppu, also known as a compact fluorescent lamp (CFL), is a type of fluorescent lamp designed to fit into standard light bulb sockets. Unlike traditional incandescent bulbs, säästölamput use a different mechanism to produce light, leading to significant energy savings. The process involves an electric current passing through mercury vapor, which then excites phosphors coating the inside of the glass tube, causing them to emit visible light.

The primary advantage of säästölamput is their energy efficiency. They consume considerably less electricity than incandescent bulbs to produce the same amount of light, often around 75% less. This translates into lower electricity bills for consumers and reduced demand on power generation, which can have environmental benefits. Another key characteristic is their longer lifespan. Säästölamput typically last much longer than incandescent bulbs, often between 6,000 and 15,000 hours, meaning fewer replacements are needed over time.

However, säästölamput also have some drawbacks. They contain a small amount of mercury, which requires careful disposal to prevent environmental contamination. They can also take a short time to reach full brightness, particularly in colder temperatures, and their light quality can sometimes be perceived as less warm or natural compared to incandescent bulbs. Early models also faced issues with flickering, though this has largely been addressed in modern designs. Despite these considerations, säästölamput played a significant role in transitioning away from less efficient lighting technologies.
