Sähkövirtapiiri, often translated as electric circuit, is a closed path through which electric current can flow. A basic circuit consists of at least a power source, such as a battery or generator, and a load, which is a device that consumes electrical energy, like a light bulb or a motor. Wires or conductors connect the power source to the load, providing the pathway for the electrons to move.

Current flow is typically defined as the movement of positive charge, even though in most metallic conductors, it is the negative electrons that are actually moving. The power source provides the electromotive force (EMF) that drives the current. The amount of current flowing in a circuit is governed by Ohm's Law, which states that the current is directly proportional to the voltage across the circuit and inversely proportional to its resistance. Resistance is a measure of how much a material opposes the flow of electric current.

Circuits can be classified as either series or parallel. In a series circuit, components are connected end-to-end, so the current has only one path to follow. In a parallel circuit, components are connected across each other, providing multiple paths for the current to flow. Understanding these fundamental concepts is crucial for analyzing and designing electrical systems.
