Szénmegkötéshez, also known as carbon capture and storage, is a process aimed at reducing the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere. After capture, the compressed CO2 is transported to a storage location, where it is injected into a geological formation or an oceanic CO2 storage site. Geological Storage involves injecting CO2 into depleted oil and gas fields, salt caverns, or saline aquifers, which have the capability to hold large amounts of CO2 without significant leakage. Oceanic storage is enhanced oil recovery and storage in the form of submarine geological reservoirs of CO2 saturated solutions in saline aquifers.

Carbon capture and storage has the potential to provide a reduced greenhouse gas emissions profile. This can be particularly beneficial for carbon-intensive industries and power plants, that can significantly benefit from incorporating carbon capture technology.

Despite the available storage methods, address the challenges to CSS implementation are huge. Effective storage of large volumes of CO2 is a big technological and engineering challenge, against potential leakage and permanence of the stored CO2.
