Szénhidrogénvegyületek, commonly referred to as hydrocarbons, are organic chemical compounds composed entirely of hydrogen and carbon atoms. The carbon atoms form a chain or a ring, and hydrogen atoms are attached to these carbon atoms. Hydrocarbons are the fundamental building blocks of many organic materials and are widely found in nature, particularly in fossil fuels such as petroleum, natural gas, and coal.

The simplest type of hydrocarbon is an alkane, which contains only single bonds between carbon atoms. Examples include methane, ethane, and propane. Alkynes are characterized by the presence of at least one triple bond between carbon atoms, like ethyne (acetylene). Hydrocarbons are crucial for modern society due to their extensive use as energy sources. They are refined into fuels like gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel. Furthermore, they serve as raw materials for the petrochemical industry, from which plastics, synthetic fibers, solvents, and many other essential products are manufactured. Their chemical properties, such as reactivity and solubility, are largely determined by the arrangement and bonding of their carbon and hydrogen atoms.
