Szintézisgáz, also known as synthesis gas or syngas, is a fuel gas mixture consisting primarily of hydrogen (H₂) and carbon monoxide (CO). Its composition can vary depending on the production method and feedstock, but these two components are the most significant. Other minor components may include carbon dioxide (CO₂), methane (CH₄), and nitrogen (N₂).

Szintézisgáz is not typically found in nature in large quantities and is almost always produced through various industrial processes. The most common methods involve the conversion of carbon-containing materials such as natural gas, coal, biomass, and even waste materials. Key production techniques include steam reforming, partial oxidation, and autothermal reforming.

The primary use of szintézisgáz is as a crucial intermediate in the production of other chemicals. It serves as a building block for synthesizing ammonia (NH₃), methanol (CH₃OH), and synthetic fuels like gasoline and diesel through processes such as the Fischer-Tropsch process. The hydrogen component is vital for ammonia synthesis, while the carbon monoxide is essential for methanol production and Fischer-Tropsch synthesis.

Beyond chemical synthesis, szintézisgáz can also be used directly as a fuel. Its combustion characteristics are similar to those of natural gas, making it suitable for power generation in turbines or internal combustion engines. However, its primary role remains as a feedstock for the chemical industry due to its versatile chemical properties.
