Szemhéjakra refers to the eyelids in Hungarian. The eyelids are protective folds of skin that cover the front of the eye. They are crucial for maintaining eye health and function. The upper and lower eyelids work together to spread tears across the surface of the eye, keeping it lubricated and free from debris. This action, known as blinking, is largely involuntary but can also be consciously controlled.

The primary function of the eyelids is protection. They shield the delicate eye from foreign objects such as dust, sand, and insects, as well as from excessive light and minor physical impacts. During sleep, the eyelids remain closed, providing a dark environment conducive to rest and allowing the eye surface to recover.

Anatomically, eyelids are composed of skin, muscle, connective tissue, and a thin mucous membrane called the conjunctiva. The muscles within the eyelids allow for opening and closing. Eyelashes, located along the edge of the eyelids, also play a role in protection by catching airborne particles. The eyelids contain glands that produce oil and mucus, contributing to the tear film that lubricates the eye. Conditions affecting the eyelids can range from minor irritations like styes to more serious issues that may require medical attention.
