The Hungarian term "szemhéjizom" translates to eyelid muscle in English. This refers to the muscles responsible for controlling the movement of the eyelids. There are two primary muscles involved: the orbicularis oculi and the levator palpebrae superioris.

The orbicularis oculi is a sphincter muscle that encircles the eye. It is responsible for closing the eyelid, a crucial action for protecting the eye from foreign objects and excessive light, as well as for blinking. This muscle is also involved in facial expressions like squinting and winking. It receives its innervation from the facial nerve.

The levator palpebrae superioris is located within the orbit and is responsible for lifting the upper eyelid. This action opens the eye, allowing vision. It is innervated by the oculomotor nerve. When this muscle contracts, the upper eyelid is raised. Conversely, when it relaxes, the eyelid lowers. The interplay between these two muscle groups allows for the fine motor control required for blinking, winking, and maintaining an open eye. Disruptions to the function of these muscles can lead to conditions like ptosis (drooping eyelid) or difficulties in closing the eye.
