Szaglóhámban is a Hungarian term that translates to "olfactory epithelium" in English. This specialized tissue is found in the nasal cavity of vertebrates and is responsible for the sense of smell. It is a mucous membrane that lines a small area of the nasal passages, typically on the superior nasal concha and the superior part of the nasal septum.

The olfactory epithelium contains several types of cells. The primary cells involved in olfaction are the olfactory receptor neurons. These neurons have cilia that project into the mucus layer covering the epithelium. Embedded within this mucus are odorant molecules that bind to specific receptors on the cilia of the olfactory neurons. This binding triggers a signal transduction cascade that ultimately leads to an electrical impulse.

Supporting cells, also known as sustentacular cells, provide structural and metabolic support to the olfactory neurons. Basal cells are stem cells that can differentiate into new olfactory neurons, allowing for continuous regeneration of the sensory cells throughout an organism's life. Bowman's glands, located beneath the epithelium, secrete mucus that keeps the surface moist and helps to dissolve odorants, making them accessible to the receptors.

When odorant molecules bind to the olfactory receptors, the resulting signals are transmitted along the axons of the olfactory neurons, which pass through the cribriform plate of the ethmoid bone to reach the olfactory bulb in the brain. From the olfactory bulb, these signals are further processed and sent to various brain regions involved in smell perception, memory, and emotion. The complex structure and function of the szaglóhámban are crucial for detecting and distinguishing a vast array of smells in the environment.
