syvästruktuuri
Syvästruktuuri refers to the underlying grammatical structure of a sentence, distinct from its surface form. In linguistics, this concept is central to transformational grammar, particularly in the work of Noam Chomsky. The surface structure is what we actually say or write, while the deep structure represents the fundamental meaning and relationships between words. For example, the sentences "The cat chased the mouse" and "The mouse was chased by the cat" have different surface structures but are understood to share a similar deep structure, indicating the same agent and patient roles.
Transformational rules are posited to explain how a deep structure can be converted into various surface structures.
