Syvyyshavainto refers to the perception of depth and distance. It is a complex process that allows us to understand the three-dimensional world around us. Our brains combine various visual cues to construct this sense of depth.

One of the primary mechanisms for depth perception is binocular vision. Our two eyes are positioned slightly apart, providing slightly different viewpoints of the same object. This difference, known as retinal disparity, is processed by the brain to estimate distance. Objects closer to us will have a greater disparity than objects farther away.

Monocular cues also contribute significantly to depth perception, even when viewing with only one eye. These cues include relative size, where larger objects are perceived as closer. Interposition, or occlusion, is another important cue; if one object partially blocks another, the blocking object is seen as being in front. Linear perspective plays a role as well, with parallel lines appearing to converge in the distance. Texture gradient describes how textures become finer and less detailed as they recede. Shading and lighting also provide clues about the shape and position of objects in space.

Motion parallax is another monocular cue related to movement. As we move our heads or bodies, closer objects appear to move faster and in the opposite direction of our motion, while distant objects move slower and in the same direction.

The brain integrates all these cues, both binocular and monocular, to create a coherent and accurate representation of the three-dimensional environment, enabling us to navigate and interact with our surroundings effectively.
