In some cases, individuals may experience flu-like symptoms before the onset of cardiac issues. The diagnosis typically involves a physical examination, electrocardiogram (ECG), blood tests, and sometimes imaging like an echocardiogram or cardiac MRI. A biopsy of the heart muscle may be performed for a definitive diagnosis.

Treatment for myocarditis depends on the underlying cause and the severity of the condition. If a viral infection is responsible, treatment may focus on supportive care to manage symptoms and allow the body to fight off the infection. For other causes, specific treatments targeting the underlying disease are necessary. In severe cases, hospitalization and medications to support heart function may be required. Recovery can vary, with some individuals experiencing a full recovery while others may develop long-term heart problems.
