Supernovajäänteistä is the Finnish term for supernova remnants. These are the expanding structures of gas and dust left behind after a star explodes in a supernova. A supernova occurs when a massive star exhausts its nuclear fuel or when a white dwarf star accretes too much material from a companion star, triggering a runaway nuclear reaction. The resulting explosion ejects the star's outer layers into space at tremendous speeds, creating a shock wave that sweeps up interstellar material.

Supernova remnants can take on various shapes and sizes, depending on the type of supernova and the surrounding interstellar medium. They are often visible in optical, radio, and X-ray wavelengths. The ejected material is enriched with heavy elements synthesized within the star during its lifetime and during the supernova itself, playing a crucial role in the chemical evolution of galaxies. Over time, these remnants expand and cool, eventually merging with the interstellar medium. Studying supernova remnants provides valuable insights into stellar evolution, nucleosynthesis, and the dynamics of the interstellar medium.
