Superjohtavuudella is a Finnish term that translates to "superconductivity" in English. Superconductivity is a phenomenon observed in certain materials when they are cooled below a critical temperature. In this state, the material exhibits two remarkable properties: zero electrical resistance and the expulsion of magnetic fields.

Zero electrical resistance means that an electric current can flow through a superconductor indefinitely without any energy loss as heat. This is in stark contrast to ordinary conductors like copper, which always have some resistance. This property has the potential for highly efficient electrical power transmission and storage.

The second key characteristic is the Meissner effect, where a superconductor expels magnetic fields from its interior. If a superconductor is placed in a magnetic field and then cooled below its critical temperature, the magnetic field lines will be pushed out. This effect allows for phenomena like magnetic levitation, where a magnet can be suspended above a superconductor.

The discovery of superconductivity dates back to 1911 when Heike Kamerlingh Onnes observed it in mercury. Since then, many other materials, including alloys and ceramics, have been found to exhibit superconductivity. Research continues to explore higher critical temperature superconductors, which would reduce the need for expensive and complex cooling systems, potentially opening up a wider range of applications. These applications could span from advanced medical imaging (MRI) and high-speed trains to particle accelerators and quantum computing.
