Sulfurlithium is a term used to denote compounds containing lithium and sulfur. It is not a single well-defined substance but a shorthand for lithium-sulfur systems, most commonly lithium sulfide (Li2S) and related polysulfide species with the formula Li2Sx (where x ranges from about 3 to 8). These species occur in inorganic synthesis and in lithium–sulfur battery research.

Chemistry and structure: Lithium sulfide is a white to off-white solid that forms when lithium metal reacts with sulfur at elevated temperature. In the solid, Li2S adopts an antifluorite-type structure, with sulfide ions forming a lattice and lithium ions occupying tetrahedral sites. Polysulfides Li2Sx consist of Li+ ions coordinated to chains or rings of sulfur and exhibit a range of stoichiometries, colors, and solubilities that depend on x and the solvent or electrolyte. In solution and in some solid-state contexts, polysulfides can shuttle between electrode surfaces, a phenomenon of particular importance in battery systems.

Applications and significance: Sulfurlithium species are central to lithium–sulfur battery technology, where sulfur or Li2S serves as the active material. The chemistry involves the formation and conversion of Li2S and Li2Sx intermediates during discharge and charge, with performance influenced by polysulfide solubility and the shuttle effect. Beyond energy storage, Li2S and related compounds serve as precursors in inorganic synthesis and materials science.

Safety: Lithium sulfide and polysulfides are moisture sensitive and can release hydrogen sulfide gas on hydrolysis, which is toxic. Proper handling requires dry or inert conditions and appropriate protective equipment.
