Sulaliuosjärjestelmät, often translated as dilution refrigeration systems or dilution refrigerators, are specialized cryogenic devices designed to achieve extremely low temperatures, typically in the millikelvin (mK) range. These temperatures are far colder than those achievable by conventional refrigerators. The core principle behind these systems relies on the unusual thermodynamic properties of a mixture of helium-3 (³He) and helium-4 (⁴He) isotopes at very low temperatures.

The operation of a dilution refrigerator involves a continuous process where a ³He-⁴He mixture is separated into two phases: a ³He-rich phase and a ³He-poor phase, which is primarily ⁴He. This separation occurs spontaneously below a certain temperature, known as the lambda point for pure ⁴He and a higher temperature for the mixture. The cooling effect is generated as ³He atoms move from the concentrated phase into the dilute phase. This process is analogous to evaporation, but it occurs in the liquid phase and requires energy, which is drawn from the system, thereby cooling it down.

The crucial component for reaching the lowest temperatures is the mixing chamber, where this phase separation and ³He transfer take place. Surrounding the mixing chamber are various heat exchangers and precooling stages, often involving liquid helium and ³He stages, to efficiently remove heat from the system and allow the mixing chamber to reach its ultimate low temperatures. Dilution refrigerators are essential tools in various scientific fields, including condensed matter physics, quantum computing, and low-temperature astrophysics, where extremely cold environments are necessary for conducting sensitive experiments and observing quantum phenomena.
