suenje

Suenje is a small commune situated in the eastern part of Romania, within Vrancea County. The administrative territory is made up of three villages—Suenje, Lăzești, and Grești—covering an area of roughly 42 square kilometres. The region lies at the foot of the Eastern Carpathians, between the rivers Prut and Siret, and its terrain is characterised by rolling hills and mixed forested land.

The earliest documentary mention of Suenje dates back to the 14th century, when the local populace was incorporated into the lands of the medieval Principality of Moldavia. During the Ottoman occupation, the area experienced depopulation and was subsequently repopulated in the 18th century by settlers from Transylvania and Wallachia. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Suenje developed modest agricultural infrastructure, including a cooperative creamery that remains a key employer.

According to the most recent census, the commune has a population of around 1,600 residents, predominantly ethnic Romanians with a small Romani minority. The majority adhere to Eastern Orthodox Christianity, as reflected in the 19th‑century St. Nicholas Church, a wooden structure that is part of the National Cultural Heritage list. The local economy remains largely agrarian, with cultivation of cereals, potatoes, and orchards forming the backbone of livelihoods. In recent years, government programmes have encouraged eco‑tourism, highlighting the natural beauty of the Carpathian foothills and the traditional way of life in rural Romania.
