Sublimoitumisesta, or sublimation in Finnish, refers to the direct transition of a substance from a solid to a gas phase without passing through the liquid phase. This phenomenon occurs when the vapor pressure of the solid exceeds the surrounding atmospheric pressure. Sublimation is an endothermic process, meaning it requires energy input, typically in the form of heat, to overcome the intermolecular forces holding the solid together.

Common examples of substances that readily sublimate include dry ice (solid carbon dioxide) and iodine. Dry ice is often used for its cooling properties because it turns directly into carbon dioxide gas, creating a visible fog. Iodine crystals, when gently heated, will produce purple iodine vapor. The reverse process, where a gas transitions directly into a solid, is called deposition or desublimation.

At lower pressures, sublimation is more likely to happen even at lower temperatures.
