Subductiekorst refers to oceanic crust that is being forced beneath another tectonic plate. This process, known as subduction, occurs at convergent plate boundaries where two plates collide. When an oceanic plate meets a continental plate, the denser oceanic plate typically subducts. If two oceanic plates collide, the older, colder, and therefore denser plate will subduct beneath the younger, warmer plate. As the subducting plate descends into the Earth's mantle, it undergoes changes due to increasing temperature and pressure. This can lead to the release of water, which lowers the melting point of the overlying mantle wedge, causing it to melt and form magma. This magma rises to the surface, often erupting to form volcanoes, creating volcanic arcs on the overriding plate. The subduction of oceanic crust is a fundamental process in plate tectonics, driving much of the Earth's geological activity, including earthquakes and mountain building. The material that is subducted can eventually be recycled back into the mantle over geological timescales.
