Sintillaatoriks is a Latvian word that translates to "scintillator" in English. A scintillator is a material that emits light when it is struck by ionizing radiation. This phenomenon is known as scintillation. Scintillators are crucial components in radiation detection equipment, finding applications in various fields such as nuclear physics, medical imaging, security, and environmental monitoring.

When ionizing radiation, such as alpha particles, beta particles, gamma rays, or neutrons, interacts with a scintillator material, it excites the atoms or molecules within the material.
