Strobilization is a term used in biology to describe the process of forming a strobilus. A strobilus is a reproductive structure found in many plants, particularly ferns, horsetails, and some gymnosperms. It is characterized by a series of closely packed spore-bearing organs, often resembling a cone or a pinecone. The arrangement of these spore-bearing units is key to the definition of a strobilus.

In ferns, strobili are often found at the tip of a frond or as modified fronds. They contain sporangia, which are the structures that produce spores. Horsetails also form strobili, where specialized leaves called sporangiophores bear the sporangia. In some extinct seed plants and certain modern gymnosperms, strobili represent cones, which can be male or female. Male strobili produce pollen, while female strobili contain ovules that develop into seeds after fertilization. The development and structure of strobili vary significantly across different plant groups, but the fundamental concept of a compact, spore- or seed-bearing structure remains consistent. This method of reproduction allows for efficient dispersal of spores or seeds, contributing to the propagation of these plant lineages.
