strømmer

Strømmer is the plural form of the Norwegian noun strøm, and is used to describe multiple flows or currents. The term spans several domains and meanings, from physical processes to figurative expressions.

In physics and electrical engineering, strømmer typically refer to electric currents—the steady movement of electric charges through a conductor. An electric current is measured in amperes and is produced by a voltage source. Ohm's law V=IR, circuit elements, alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC), and power relations (P=VI) are common concepts associated with strømmer.

In hydrology, oceanography and meteorology, strømmer describe the movement of fluids and gases: river and ocean currents, wind streams, and atmospheric circulation. These currents transport heat, nutrients and pollutants, and influence weather, climate and marine navigation.

In everyday Norwegian, strømmer can also be used metaphorically to denote streams or flows of people, data or information, e.g. "strømmer av trafikk" or "data-strømmer".

Strømmer derives from strøm, related to the Old Norse strǫm- and to the English word stream, indicating a flow or current.
