Stereospesifinen is a term used in chemistry to describe a reaction that proceeds in a way that is dependent on the stereochemistry of the starting materials. In other words, the way the atoms are arranged in three-dimensional space in the reactants influences the stereochemistry of the products. This means that if you have two different stereoisomers of a starting material, a stereospecific reaction will produce different stereoisomers of the product for each starting material. This contrasts with a stereoselective reaction, where a reaction may favor one stereoisomer of the product over others, but both starting stereoisomers might lead to the same favored product.

Stereospecificity is a consequence of the reaction mechanism. The way bonds are broken and formed, and the spatial relationships between atoms during the transition state, dictate which stereoisomers of the product can be formed from a given stereoisomer of the reactant. For example, in an addition reaction to an alkene, if the addition is syn (both new groups add to the same face of the double bond), then a cis alkene will produce a racemic mixture of enantiomers (if the product has a chiral center), while a trans alkene will produce a meso compound (if the product has a plane of symmetry). This outcome is predictable and specific to the stereochemistry of the alkene.
