Stereoisomeerinä is the Finnish term for stereoisomer. Stereoisomers are a type of isomer, which are molecules that have the same molecular formula but differ in the spatial arrangement of their atoms. This difference in three-dimensional structure leads to distinct physical and chemical properties. The most common types of stereoisomers are enantiomers and diastereomers.

Enantiomers are stereoisomers that are non-superimposable mirror images of each other, much like a left and right hand. They have identical physical properties, such as melting point and boiling point, but differ in their interaction with plane-polarized light. One enantiomer will rotate plane-polarized light in one direction, while its mirror image will rotate it by the same amount in the opposite direction. This property is known as optical activity. Enantiomers also exhibit different biological activities because biological systems, such as enzymes and receptors, are often chiral and can distinguish between mirror images.

Diastereomers, on the other hand, are stereoisomers that are not mirror images of each other. They typically arise in molecules with multiple chiral centers or in the case of geometric isomers (cis-trans isomers) around double bonds or in rings. Unlike enantiomers, diastereomers can have different physical properties and are not necessarily optically active. For example, they can have different melting points, boiling points, and solubilities. The study of stereoisomers is crucial in organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, and biochemistry, as it helps explain variations in reactivity, biological function, and physical characteristics of chemical compounds.
