Static pressure is a fundamental concept in fluid mechanics, referring to the pressure exerted by a fluid at rest or the pressure exerted by a moving fluid in the direction perpendicular to the flow. It is one of the components of the total pressure of a fluid, alongside dynamic pressure and elevation pressure (or hydrostatic pressure). In a stationary fluid, static pressure is uniform in all directions and is simply the force per unit area exerted by the fluid's weight or by external forces compressing it.

When a fluid is in motion, static pressure still exists and represents the pressure that would be measured by an instrument moving with the fluid, or by a probe inserted into the flow such that it does not disturb the flow itself. It is the pressure that would be felt by a person submerged in a moving fluid. For ideal fluids, Bernoulli's principle describes the relationship between static pressure, dynamic pressure, and elevation pressure. Static pressure decreases as the speed of the fluid increases, provided the elevation remains constant. This phenomenon is crucial in understanding lift on aircraft wings and the operation of devices like Venturi meters and Pitot tubes. In engineering, static pressure is a key parameter for designing systems involving fluid flow, such as pipelines, pumps, and ventilation systems.
