Stahlgefüge refers to the microstructure of steel, which is the arrangement of its constituent phases at a microscopic level. Steel is primarily an alloy of iron and carbon, but the presence of other alloying elements and the specific heat treatment processes it undergoes dictate the final microscopic structure.

Ferrite is a solid solution of carbon in body-centered cubic iron, characterized by its softness and ductility. Cementite is iron carbide (Fe3C), a hard and brittle intermetallic compound.
