Spændingsamplitude refers to the maximum displacement or value of an alternating voltage from its zero or average value. It is a fundamental parameter in describing sinusoidal alternating voltages and other periodic waveforms. Imagine a wave oscillating up and down around a central line; the spændingsamplitude is the height of the peak of that wave above the central line. It is typically measured in volts (V).

The spændingsamplitude is distinct from other voltage measures, such as RMS (root mean square) voltage, which represents the equivalent DC voltage that would produce the same amount of power dissipation. For a pure sine wave, the spændingsamplitude is equal to the RMS voltage multiplied by the square root of 2 (approximately 1.414). It is also different from the peak-to-peak voltage, which is the total difference between the maximum positive and maximum negative voltage values of the waveform, and is equal to twice the spændingsamplitude.
