Sp3 hybridization is a concept in molecular chemistry that describes the process by which one s orbital and three p orbitals on an atom combine to form four equivalent hybrid orbitals. The process occurs when an atom, such as carbon, undergoes excitation that promotes an electron from an inner orbital to a higher energy level, allowing the mixing of one s orbital with three p orbitals.
