The Southern Hemisphere is the half of Earth that lies south of the Equator. It contains the continents of Antarctica and most of South America, and parts of Africa and Oceania. The other half is the Northern Hemisphere.

The Southern Hemisphere experiences opposite seasons to the Northern Hemisphere. This means that when it is summer in the North, it is winter in the South, and vice versa. The longest day of the year in the Southern Hemisphere occurs around December 21st or 22nd, while the shortest day is around June 20th or 21st.

The Southern Hemisphere is home to a diverse range of climates, from the tropical rainforests of the Amazon to the icy plains of Antarctica. It also contains a significant portion of the world's oceans, including the southern parts of the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Oceans.

Due to its location, the Southern Hemisphere experiences unique astronomical phenomena. For example, the constellation Crux (the Southern Cross) is a prominent feature of the southern night sky. The Moon also appears to be upside down compared to its appearance in the Northern Hemisphere.

The population of the Southern Hemisphere is considerably smaller than that of the Northern Hemisphere, with the majority of people living in South America and Australia. This is partly due to the vast uninhabited landmass of Antarctica and the smaller total land area compared to the North.
