Sotavankien is a small town and municipality in the northern highlands of a temperate region. It lies along the Sotavanke River and is nestled between forested hills and open meadows. The area experiences four distinct seasons, with mild summers and cold winters.

The settlement originated in the medieval period around a fortress and the Sotavankien Monastery, a stone complex dating to the 12th century.
