Sonnambula is an opera in two acts by Vincenzo Bellini, with a libretto by Felice Romani. The opera premiered in Milan on March 6, 1831. It tells the story of Amina, a young woman who is a sleepwalker. Her somnambulism, combined with the jealous machinations of Lisa, leads to misunderstandings and near-tragedy with her fiancé, Elvino.

The role of Amina is famously demanding, requiring a singer with exceptional vocal agility, a pure tone, and the ability to convey deep emotion. The most iconic aria in the opera is "Ah, non credea mirarti," sung by Amina in a trance-like state, followed by the coloratura showpiece "Ah, non giunge."

The plot unfolds in a Swiss village. Amina, an orphan adopted by the miller Lisa, is betrothed to Elvino. Lisa, also in love with Elvino, spreads rumors about Amina's supposed infidelities, exploiting her sleepwalking episodes to create evidence. During a crucial moment, Elvino sees Amina sleepwalking and, believing her unfaithful, breaks their engagement. However, the truth is revealed when Amina, while sleepwalking again, walks out onto a perilous mill bridge. Her father, Rodolfo, saves her and explains her condition. Witnessing Amina's near-fatal accident and understanding the truth, Elvino begs for her forgiveness, and they are reunited.

Sonnambula remains a staple of the operatic repertoire, celebrated for Bellini's lyrical melodies and the dramatic opportunities it offers to the soprano protagonist.
