A solar concentrator is an optical device that uses reflective or refractive elements to focus sunlight onto a small area, increasing the light intensity for heating, chemical reactions, or electricity generation. They are used in solar thermal plants and in some photovoltaic systems.

The main categories are reflective concentrators (parabolic troughs, parabolic dishes, heliostats in solar towers) and refractive concentrators (Fresnel lenses used in CPV systems). Linear troughs and dishes focus sunlight along a line or at a focal point; towers use arrays of heliostats to reflect sunlight onto a receiver atop a central tower.

Operation involves tracking the sun to maintain alignment; concentration ratios can range from tens to thousands, depending on design. Receivers transfer absorbed energy to a heat-transfer fluid or to high-efficiency photovoltaic cells. CPV systems need cooling and precise optics to prevent overheating and cell damage. Many solar thermal systems store heat for power generation when sun is not available.

Advantages include higher efficiency at given physics limits and reduced receiver area, supporting storage and dispatchable power. Challenges include optical and thermal losses, higher capital cost, maintenance of moving parts, and land-use considerations. They are a key component of utility-scale solar energy and have been deployed in various configurations worldwide.
