Sisäkalvot, also known as inner membranes, are cellular structures found within eukaryotic cells. They are primarily associated with organelles such as mitochondria and the endoplasmic reticulum. These membranes play a crucial role in compartmentalizing cellular functions, allowing for specialized biochemical reactions to occur in distinct environments.

In mitochondria, the inner membrane is folded into cristae, which significantly increase the surface area. This enlarged surface area is vital for the electron transport chain and ATP synthesis, the main processes of cellular respiration. The selective permeability of the inner mitochondrial membrane is essential for maintaining the proton gradient necessary for ATP production.

The endoplasmic reticulum, another organelle enclosed by inner membranes, is involved in protein synthesis, lipid metabolism, and calcium storage. The rough endoplasmic reticulum is studded with ribosomes, facilitating protein folding and modification, while the smooth endoplasmic reticulum is involved in lipid synthesis and detoxification.

The nuclear envelope, a double membrane surrounding the nucleus, also functions as an inner membrane system. It separates the genetic material from the cytoplasm and regulates the passage of molecules between the nucleus and the rest of the cell through nuclear pores. These inner membranes are dynamic structures, constantly interacting with other cellular components and contributing to the overall organization and efficiency of the eukaryotic cell.
