Sintering is a process of compacting and forming a solid mass of material by heating. The particles of the material are bonded together through diffusion. The word "sintering" is derived from the Middle High German word "sintern," which means "to glow and become one." Sintering is a solid-state process, meaning that the material is heated below its melting point. This prevents it from becoming a liquid and thus avoids issues related to liquid-phase sintering, such as shrinkage and pore formation.
The process involves several stages. Initially, as the material is heated, a process called necking occurs.
